Organic Gardening & Homesteading FAQs
Thinking about starting a garden or backyard homestead but not sure where to begin? You’re in the right place! We’ve answered the most common questions about organic gardening, raising animals, and preserving food—without the overwhelm.
What is organic gardening?
Organic gardening means growing food without synthetic chemicals. Instead, we use compost, mulch, and natural pest control to build healthy soil and plants. It’s better for you, the environment, and your garden’s long-term success.
How do I start a homestead?
Start small! Grow a few veggies, get a couple of chickens, and learn as you go. Focus on food, water, and shelter. It’s a journey—don’t rush it. We’re here to support you every step of the way. Make sure you sign up here to get our weekly email with homesteading tips!
What are the benefits of raised beds?
Raised beds warm up faster in spring, drain better, and keep weeds at bay. They also make gardening easier on your back and help control soil quality.
How do I improve sandy soil?
Add compost, aged manure, or mulch to retain moisture and nutrients. Over time, organic matter will help sandy soil hold water better. We love the no-dig gardening method because it improves soil quickly.
What’s the best way to rotate crops?
Rotate plant families yearly to prevent soil depletion and pests. A simple rule: Don’t plant the same type of crop in the same spot two years in a row.
How do I handle garden pests naturally?
Hand-pick bugs, attract beneficial insects, and use companion planting. Neem oil, diatomaceous earth, and row covers also help keep pests under control.
What tools do I need to start gardening?
You’ll want a trowel, pruners, gloves, a hoe, a rake, and a watering can or hose. Keep it simple and add tools as needed.
How do I start composting?
Toss food scraps, leaves, and yard waste into a compost bin. Keep it moist and turn it occasionally. In a few months, you’ll have rich soil to feed your garden.
What animals are best for beginners?
Chickens and rabbits! They’re low-maintenance, provide eggs or meat, and help with composting. Plus, they don’t need a ton of space.
How do I conserve water in my garden?
Use mulch, collect rainwater, and water in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation. Drip irrigation is great, but it isn’t a necessity. We still water our gardens the good old fashioned way - with a watering hose!
How can I garden year-round?
Grow cool-season crops in fall, start seedlings indoors, and use row covers or greenhouses in winter. Succession planting keeps food growing year-round. We’ll teach you all about it in Garden School.
How do I keep my soil healthy?
Add compost regularly, rotate crops, and plant cover crops in the off-season. Healthy soil means healthy plants! Don’t forget that tilling can actually damage your soil long-term. Research no dig gardening methods and permaculture to really baby your soil.
What are common homesteading challenges?
Time, money, and unexpected failures. Start small, keep learning, and don’t expect perfection. Every mistake teaches you something valuable.
How do I use permaculture in my backyard?
Work with nature, not against it! Use rainwater, plant perennials, and let animals help with pest control and fertilization.
What’s the best way to control weeds naturally?
Mulch, mulch, mulch! Also, pull weeds when they’re small, plant densely, and use landscape fabric or cardboard in trouble spots.
